Bowling Teams Compete in AHSAA State Tournament Thursday and Friday
The Southside Lady Panther Bowling team’s quest for a 4th consecutive AHSAA state title begins Thursday at Oak Mountain Lanes in Pelham for the AHSAA State Championship tournament. After a dominating sweep of the North Regional (4 wins with an average margin of victory of 354 pins), the girls enter the final week of the season at 29-0 and riding a 52 game winning streak. “These girls have already accomplished so much in previous years, but to watch what they’ve been doing lately has been unbelievable” said coach Zack Blume. “We just have so many performing at a high level, and they seem to find an extra gear when the lights get brighter.” The lady panthers had 4 members make the all region team (Jessica Clontz: 2nd, Ashlee Hull: 3rd, Cheyanne Bohannon: 5th, Grace Ann Clontz: 7th) after having 4 earn all state honors last year.
On the boys side, the Panthers earned their 3rd consecutive state bid after finishing 5th at the North Regional tournament. The boys defeated Grissom high school and took eventual tournament champion Sparkman to the final frame before falling in the quarterfinals. “These guys have come so far this year and I’m really proud of what they’ve been able to accomplish” said Blume. “We only had 2 returning bowlers from last year, so for them to step up and make it this far is amazing. We are capable of competing with anybody in the state and hopefully have a great week ahead of us.”
The AHSAA State Championship tournament starts Thursday January 23rd with all 32 teams bowling 3 traditional games. This will determine seeding for the 16 team single elimination tournament Friday. The Friday matches will be head to head and feature the baker format of 1 traditional game and 3 baker games.
